Seniors' Outreach, Day, and Support Programs 

 

 

411 Seniors Centre 604-684-8171. The 411 Seniors Centre is an easily accessible, multi-purpose social and recreational drop in facility for seniors. Centrally located in downtown Vancouver, the Centre offers a variety of programs, services and special projects for seniors.

 

A.S.K. Friendship Society 601 West 59th Avenue, Vancouver, BC. 604-263-7333. A non profit support service for seniors. One of A.S.K.'s (The Arbutus, Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale Friendship Society) primary goals is to help seniors remain happy and healthy while living in their homes for as long as possible.


BC Pets and Friends 210-927 Denvent Way, Delta, BC. 604-523-1557. A visitation program that uses volunteer dogs, cats and birds that are trained to interact with people who require facility care such as long-term hospitalization patients, institution residents and mental health boarders.

Block Parents - Helping Seniors 1-888-474-9577. If you should feel ill, or become lost while walking in any community with a Block Parent Program, simply look for a house displaying the red and white Block Parent sign. Knock on the door for assistance.

Burnaby Information and Community Services 16-250 Willingdon Ave, Burnaby, BC V5C 5E9. 604-299-5778. Provides an Information & Referral service that helps people find answers to their questions, and services for their needs. Includes a Seniors' Transportation programme which provides transportation for Burnaby seniors who are unable to take public transportation to their medical appointments. Dedicated volunteers pick up clients at their residence, transport them to a medical appointment, stay with them, and return clients home. 

 

Cats for Seniors (no link available) Contact: Carole 604-536-9456 ccoates@shaw.ca, or Gillian 604-542-2672 eriheid@hotmail.com.  White Rock, BC. Cats For Seniors is a registered non profit society placing mature cats in the homes of clients 55 years of age or older. There is no cost to clients. Cats are monitored for good health and social skills before placement. A litter box and carrier scratch post are provided. Food, litter, and vet expenses are covered upon need. A visitor will be available to you if necessary, and if you are no longer able to care for the cat, we will take it back into the programme and re-house it.

ElderPost  Similar to the popular Craigslist, this site is for the public to advertise and find free equipment and services, caregiver resources, pre-owned equipment for sale, commercial services for seniors, and more.  It is also a great place for people to give away what they don't need - to know that their generosity helps out others who cannot afford to buy or rent equipment.  ElderPost is a place for people to be able to help each other. Concerts  for seniors ...golden oldies guitar and song. (No link available) Performing songs from 1900 through today, Peter Austen has been singing and playing guitar in senior homes for over 20 years.  Services offered throughout the Lower Mainland including Whister.  Telephone 604-898-9775 to book your concert.

 

Mike's Critters offers a travelling road show providing a fun, hands-on experience with animals. Their collection of photos of local senior centers from 2003 - 2008 represent their shows at different senior centers. A great way to see inside the different facilities.

George Pearson Centre 604-321-3231  A home for adults with severe disabilities. The people who live here require specialized assistance as a result of disability. The disabilities include multiple sclerosis, spinal cord and traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and a variety of other conditions.

The "Red Book Online" provides detailed descriptions of over 4,000 community, social, and government agencies across the province.

Kitsilano Neighbourhood House 2325 West 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V6K 1Y4. 604-736-3588. Offers a shopping program, which provides transportation to and from Safeway where volunteers help the seniors do their shopping.


Marpole-Oakridge Area Council Society (M0ACS) 1305 W. 70th Ave, Vancouver, BC V6P 2Y6. 604 266 5301. A non-profit community service group offering programs to the community including classes, meals, and outings, as well as activities and services specifically designed for seniors.

An all-volunteer, non-profit society, dedicated to including the family caregiver in a network of support services developed by communities in the mid-Vancouver Island region. Pads - Pacific Assistance Dogs Society 9048 - Stormont Ave Burnaby, BC V3N 4G6. 604-527-0556. PADS is a non-profit organization whose mission is to raise and train dogs for people facing the daily challenges of life with a disability. PADS dogs are specially trained to aid the physically disabled, the deaf and hard-of-hearing. They are a great support for persons unable to perform simple tasks such as turning on light switches, retrieving dropped items, or even answering telephones.

Pet Lifeline offers wearable LIFELINE products for people that uniquely identify you as a pet owner. Each of our wearable ID products has a unique serial number that will identify you as a pet owner. Emergency workers can call our toll-free LIFELINE and inform our operator that you have pets in need of assistance should an unexpected accident occur. We keep vital information about your pets in our Pet Home Rescue Database along with the contacts you rely on to care for them if you are unable to.

Provincial Respiratory Outreach Program 1-866-326-1245 (Toll Free) Dedicated to enabling people who need assisted ventilation to meet their respiratory needs while living in the community. The program provides a comprehensive range of equipment and supplies, respiratory therapy, education and peer group support.

Senior Citizens Telephone Book This book is produced by Citizen Support Services. It contains information about programs, benefits, agencies and services that are available to seniors who live in the Burnaby area.  

Seniors Bureau Lawn and Yard Maintenance Western Society for Senior Citizens' Services, 330 Sixth Street, New Westminster, BC V3L 3A8. 604-524-0516. Provides basic lawn and yard maintenance referrals. Runs a May to September lawn-care service, which employs students. Serves New Westminster and Burnaby.

Seniors Bureau Shopping Assistance Services Western Society for Senior Citizens' Services, 330 Sixth Street, New Westminster, BC V3L 3A8. 604-524-0516. Provides assistance to seniors and people with disabilities who are unable to do their own shopping. In the Shop By Phone Service, volunteers take orders and do the clients' shopping. Mall Shopping Companions provides wheelchairs and volunteers to meet clients at local malls to assist with their personal shopping. Clients must be registered with HandyDART.

Seniors' Hub Capilano Community Services Society, North Building, 600 West Queen's Road, North Vancouver, BC V7N 2L3. 604-988-7115. Provides a variety of support programs for isolated seniors, such as the Telefriend Service, volunteer drivers, monthly social programs, friendly visiting, grocery shopping, and group discussion.
